I've done a few things. Some of them even made sense.
I've spent much of my professional life creating, developing, and producing television. I've sold shows, worked on both sides of the network desk, and pitched enough ideas to know that sometimes the craziest ones are the ones that sell.
But television is only part of the story.
I've always loved aviation. Enough to get a degree in it. I've flown dozens of different aircraft, from a Piper Cub to riding in the backseat of a Thunderbird F-16. I've also jumped out of perfectly good airplanes. Apparently, just flying them wasn't enough.
I've been underwater in a submarine, worked behind a bar, and developed a collecting habit that eventually inspired my first television sale, Hardcore Hobbies — a show about obsessive collectors who might need an intervention.
For the record, I still haven't had mine.
I've always been curious. I like figuring out how things work, meeting interesting people, and trying things simply because I haven't done them before.
In my younger days in Chicago, I was a custom home builder. Eventually, I traded residential construction for commercial and residential real estate, where I now own and manage properties through MDIT Schorvitz LLC in the Chicago and Los Angeles markets.
I still like building things. These days, I prefer to stay off ladders.
I've never been much for being in front of a camera or on stage. But at a charity auction, I bought myself a small part in a production. A very small part. It was all I could afford.
My future wife was there helping her boss, who had purchased the lead role and needed a little assistance. We met in the wings.
More than 20 years of happy marriage later, I'd say that particular performance worked out pretty well.
Some experiences turn into careers. Others turn into stories. Occasionally, one changes your life.
My daughter calls me Barbie. Apparently, I've done just about everything.
I wear it as a badge of honor.
These days, I'm still creating and pitching original television formats, managing real estate, collecting things that catch my eye, and finding new ways to keep myself entertained.
I'm not particularly interested in doing just one thing.
And I don't see that changing anytime soon.
